In the early decades of “modern” shipping to the Caribbean , most of the ships used in the trade were small short sea vessels able to carry only from 20 to 60 containers. Ports did not have the ability to unload them except by using ship’s gear or roll-on/roll off modes. We used telex; and faxes were still several years away from general use. Importers did not know the concept of Just In Time (JIT), but rather were concerned only with “when would the boat reach?”

Fast forward to the 21st century where anyone with a PC can access the world’s far reaching markets via the internet and email. The Caribbean and Latin America are no longer merely the end of the line as far as shipping is concerned but have become world-leading tourism destinations.

In an age when ships transporting thousands of containers at a time and mega carriers absorbing other mega carriers like sharks preying on their own, the Caribbean still relies on personal service.Consignees appreciate having someone who cares about their business. Change comes fast and with a brutality that can leave many scratching their heads figuring out how to source their goods efficiently and with timely delivery.

Ships, planes and trucks transport cargo. But it takes people to move cargo through an exceedingly complex network fraught with barriers of trade including security inspections and demand that will continue to overwhelm transportation infrastructure for years to come.
